2 vs. 1

Not all hearing impaired individuals are candidates for two hearing aids. However, for those with aidable hearing loss in both ears, why are two hearing aids better than one?

Benefits of Two Hearing Aids:

Localizing Sounds:

The brain relies on both ears to determine where sounds are coming from. Wearing two hearing aids provides the brain with cues required for localizing sound.

Clearer hearing:

With two hearing aids, the brain receives signals from both ears and is better able to filter out unimportant information, which makes the relevant signals clearer.

Balance:

Two hearing aids can help to maintain balance through distributing sounds to both ears, which is important for the sense of balance.

Keeping the auditory system stimulated:

With two hearing aids both sides of the auditory system are stimulated. With lack of stimulation, individuals may lose their ability to understand speech overtime (a process known as auditory deprivation). It is critical to keep the brain stimulated with sounds to maintain one’s ability to process speech. Essentially, if you don’t use it, you lose it!
